Kirinyaga Governor Anne
Waiguru has condemned the violent act where a man in Nakuru attacked and
injured his wife following a domestic dispute.
The man allegedly attacked
his wife Thursday night with a panga leaving her for dead before going into
hiding.
Waiguru condemned the act and
called on couples to exercise restraint instead of resorting to domestic
violence.
"Whatever the disagreement, we
should never resort to violence. Gender-based violence has no place in our
society. I call on investigative authorities to apprehend the perpetrator and
ensure justice is served,” Waiguru said on X.
"I also pray for Shiko’s
healing and quick recovery."
Multiple reports said the
suspect slashed his wife’s hands and threatened to kill their children.
The incident comes days after
a man was on Monday handed a three-year jail term by a Murang’a court after he
admitted to charges of assaulting and inflicting injuries to his wife using a
machete.
Francis Mwaniki, 45, was
accused of assaulting and severely injuring his wife Rachael Wambui
on October 5 at Gitiri village in Kahuro subcounty, Murang’a.
The court heard that Mwaniki arrived at his home in the evening and caused commotion before he took a machete and cut his wife on her cheek and right hand.
He alleged committed the
offence while under the influence of alcohol and bhang.
Latest statistics indicate
that Kenya is grappling with rising cases of gender-based violence with
majority of the victims being women.
The Nairobi Women Hospital
reported that it receives about 4,000 GBV cases monthly at its gender violence
recovery centres.
Statistics from the
government released by the police indicate that in the past three months alone,
at least 97 women were killed in a worrying trend of rising femicide in the
country, translating to roughly one woman being killed every day.
The victims included a mother, her daughter and niece, who were killed in Eastleighall on the same day and their bodies dumped in different locations within Nairobi.
