Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who is now acting as the Interior CS, has gazetted 27 new sub-counties in a move aimed at improving citizen’s access to government services.
He also gazetted 59 divisions, 170 locations and 322 sub-locations to effectively address security issues in respective areas.
“We have officially established 578 new administrative units across the country by gazettement,” he said in the notice.
“When operational, the 27 Sub-Counties, 59 Divisions, 170 Locations, and 322 Sub-Locations will improve citizens' access to Government services and effectively address security issues in respective areas.”
Mudavadi said the additions to the administrative units were necessitated by population growth and to comply with the ministerial 2:1 ratio.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 14(1) of the National Government Coordination Act, 2013, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration establishes the following Administrative Units as service delivery co-ordination units,” he said.
The sub-counties include Magarini South (Magarini renamed), Magarini North, Kokane: Headquarters – Assa, Akachiu, Maua (Igembe South renamed), Tharaka West: Headquarters - Kibung'a, Mukothima, Ndithini: Headquarters Kiatineni Market, Nuu: Headquarters - Nuu Trading Centre and Zombe (Mutitu Sub County re-named).
Others are Illeret, Engineer, Soin: Headquarters-Kipsitet, Sigowet (Soin Sigowet renamed): Headquarters- Chepkemel, Kolowa: Headquarters – Kolowa, Baringo West: Headquarters- Barwesa, Mukutani: Headquarters – Mukutani, Tiaty Central (Tiaty West renamed): Headquarters – Chemolingot and Samburu West: Headquarters – Loosuk.
Mudavadi also gazette Saboti, North East Kano: Headquarters – Masogo, Ndhiwa East: Headquarters – Ombo, Ndhiwa West (Ndhiwa renamed), Siaya West: Headquarters-Uranga, Embakasi East, Embakasi West and Embakasi North.
Embakasi Central (Embakasi renamed), Embakasi South, Roysambu and Ruaraka were also listed in the gazette.
The changes have affected 31 counties.
In February, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, then Interior CS announced the creation of new administrative units in 31 counties to enhance service delivery.
The units are run by National Administration officers who include the Regional Commissioner, County Commissioners, Sub County Commissioners, Assistant County Commissioners, Chiefs and their assistants.
