The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned Khalef Khalifa, Director of Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI), over alleged hate remarks.
Khalifa is alleged to have made the statements that were on the verge of hate speech, ethnic contempt, and religious discrimination and reportedly sparked fears of division in Lamu County.
The NCIC says they view the utterances as a threat to Kenya’s peace and unity, Revered Samuel Kobia, NCIC Chairman, emphasized.
"Our Constitution and laws unequivocally protect the rights of all Kenyans, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation," Kobia said.
The Commission has summoned Khalifa to appear before it on December 9, 2024, as part of a comprehensive investigation into alleged hate remarks.
“We have commenced thorough investigations and will ensure appropriate action is taken,” added Kobia.
In response to reported escalating tensions, the NCIC has announced plans to convene a consultative peace dialogue in Lamu County.
The forum will bring together political, religious, youth, and community leaders to deliberate on fostering coexistence and strengthening integration among Lamu’s diverse communities.
“Kenyans have painstakingly built a culture of living peacefully alongside each other. This must not be jeopardised by incitement,” stated the Commission.
The NCIC has also called on Kenyans to exercise tolerance and respect as law enforcement agencies address the matter.
“When all is said and done, we are one people, one nation, sharing a common destiny. Let us guard our peace jealously,” urged Kobia.
