Kindiki calls for more climate financing for Kenya

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is now calling for more climate financing for Kenya, even as it positions itself as a leader in battling the adverse effects of climate change.

Speaking during a meeting with German Vice Chancellor and Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck, Kindiki said Kenya recognises the urgent need for climate action.

The DP said Kenya itself has been affected by this and thus the need for urgent mitigation measures.

He noted that Kenya, through the leadership of President William Ruto believes that climate change is a threat to all and requires collaboration to deal with it.

“The impacts of climate changes and its consequences are much felt in Africa. Kenya is experiencing these impacts through longer droughts, erratic rainfall, shifting weather patterns and all these things undermine food security, water access and energy generation.

“As a country we do recognise the urgency of climate action. President William Ruto has been a thought leader for Africa championing climate action, climate justice and climate financing and looking at climate change as a collective threat that requires collective solutions,” Kindiki said.

He added that it is his hope that solution to the issue of climate financing will be found during German African Business Summit (GABS).

“We just hope that the summit happening in Nairobi will address green financing issues and also come up with solution that will address climate financing and support Kenya in our efforts to combat effects of climate change and champion adaptation challenges.

“Germany has been a long term leader and we hope that we will build on that to strengthen Kenya's capacity to combat climate change.”

Habeck is in Kenya for the two-day German African Business Summit (GABS) which will end on Wednesday, December 4, 2024

The conference is held every two years and encourages economic partnerships between business and government leaders in Africa and Germany.

During the meeting at the DP’s Karen Residence, the two leaders discussed how to advance mutually beneficial cooperation between Kenya and Germany.

These areas include agriculture, livestock, labour migration, tourism, air services, trade, investments, and climate diplomacy.

Present during the meeting were Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba (Education), and Principal Secretaries Teresia Mbaika (Devolution), Roseline Njogu (Diaspora Affairs), Abubakar Hassan (Investment Promotion) and Dr. Idris Salim Dakota (Cabinet Affairs), among other senior officials from Kenya and Germany.
