Heavy Rains pound Nairobi on December 14, 2023.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued its weather outlook for the period between December 3, to December 9, 2024.

In its forecast, Kenya Met said many parts of the country will record decreased rainfall.

While several parts of  the nation are expected to experience reduced precipitation, isolated areas will still receive significant showers

Some regions, including the Lake Victoria Basin, the South Rift Valley, the South-Eastern Lowlands, and the Coastal areas, will still experience scattered showers.

The department also highlighted extreme temperatures expected during the same period.

Kenya Met said during the daytime, temperatures are expected to rise above 30°C.

Daytime temperatures are likely to exceed 30°C in coastal areas, northeastern Kenya, and the northwestern regions, including Turkana and Lodwar.

On the other hand, chilly nights will dominate parts of the Central Highlands and the Central Rift Valley, with temperatures dropping below 10°C in certain locations.

These conditions may require residents to take precautions, particularly in maintaining proper hydration during hot days and ensuring adequate warmth during the cooler nights.

To help Kenyans remain informed and prepared, the Kenya Meteorological Department has made several resources available.

Detailed weather updates can be found on their official website.

For localized alerts and detailed maps, citizens can access such information on the department's WhatsApp channel whose link is often provided in their announcements.

Additionally, the FASTA-Ken app offers an easy way to track weather patterns and receive timely updates; it can be downloaded via their official platform.

The weather outlook underscores the need for preparedness, particularly in the agricultural and transportation sectors.

Reduced rainfall may impact water availability for crops in affected areas, while regions experiencing heavy rainfall may face challenges such as water logging and road disruptions.

In addition, the predicted temperature extremes emphasize the importance of public health measures to mitigate heat-related illnesses in hot regions and respiratory conditions in colder areas.

As the weather changes, the public is urged  by the Meteorological Centre to share observations and experiences.
