President William Ruto has congratulated Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who has been elected as the fifth President of Namibia.
President-elect Nandi-Ndaitwah was voted in as Namibia's first female president and fifth president.
The electoral commission said she had won more than 57 per cent of the vote, with her closest rival, Panduleni Itula, getting 26 per cent.
The President congratulated her, saying her election is a powerful reminder that no one is limited to achieving high political seats.
"Congratulations, Your Excellency Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, on your election as the fifth President of the Republic of Namibia,” Ruto said.
"Your election as Namibia's first woman president—and the third ever woman president in Africa—is a powerful reminder to the people of our continent that there is no limit to what they can achieve in politics.”
After the announcement of her victory, Nandi Ndaitwah said: "The Namibian nation has voted for peace and stability."
Once sworn in, she will join an exclusive club, as at the moment Tanzania's Samia Suluhu Hassan is Africa's only female president.
Other leaders across the continent congratulated her, saying her election is a testament to democracy.
South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa extended his congratulations to Nandi-Ndaitwah on X on Wednesday.
"Your election as fifth President of the Republic and the first woman in our region to hold this high office is a testament to democracy and its ability to transform our societies," his statement read.
Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi congratulated President-elect Nandi-Ndaitwah, wishing her well.
“Warm congratulations to H.E. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of the ruling SWAPO party on her historic election as Namibia’s first female president. Your victory reflects the trust and hope the people of Namibia have placed in your leadership and vision,” Mudavadi said.
“As you embark on this remarkable chapter, we in Kenya look forward to strengthening the enduring ties between our countries and exploring new avenues of collaboration.”
