Former President Uhuru Kenyatta Kenyatta has for the first time opened up on how difficult it was for him when his daughter, Ngina Kenyatta was getting married.
Speaking at the wedding ceremony of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s daughter on Saturday, Uhuru said handing over her daughter for marriage was very difficult.
He disclosed that he tried to use all the excuses he could to delay the wedding including Covid-19 and the 2022 general elections until he could no longer make excuses.
“One of the most difficult things is saying kwaheri to a daughter. I went through the same problem. I tried to use every single excuse in the book to delay this thing. Unajua kuna Covid wacha tungoje tuone. Bado saa, wacha tupange. Kuna uchaguzi unakuja wacha tufanye hii kwanza (You know there is Covid. Let's wait and see. It’s not yet time, let's plan later. There is an election coming up, let's finish with the election) until I eventually run out of excuses,” Uhuru said.
This is the first time the former President has publicly talked about his only daughter’s marriage.
Uhuru's daughter Ngina got married in June 2022 in a private ceremony held at State House, Nairobi.
Ngina got married to Alex Mwai, the son of Sam Mwai, a renowned sports marketing guru and manager of the Karen Country Club.
Damarie Saada Kalonzo tied the knot with Martin Nyaga in an exquisite ceremony graced by their family members and close political allies of the Former Vice President.
Uhuru lauded the groom for choosing to follow the correct channel in marrying Kalonzo's daughter.
This is one of the few events the former President has graced since he left the presidency.
