Court haults expansion of Kiambu Road

The Green Belt Movement has challenged plans to hive off 51 acres from Karura Forest for road expansion.

A Lands court has issued orders blocking the state from proceeding with the expansion of Kiambu Road.

Environment and Lands Court Judge Anne Omollo issued the order following an application filed by the Green Belt Movement on December 10 that challenged plans by the state to hive off 51 acres from Karura forest for expansion of the road.

"The respondents are hereby prohibited from carrying out the planned construction or any other activity related to the construction of the recreational facility, ablution block and the dualing of Kiambu Road affecting Karura Forest Reserve, pending hearing and determination of the motion," the Judge said.

She at the same time allowed Katiba Institute to participate in the case as an interested party and directed the matter be heard February 3 next year.
