Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has said that the government is set to deploy 200 police reservists in Tana River.

Kindiki said that the move will help to maintain peace and end banditry in prone areas.

Speaking on Friday in Tana River, the DP called on political and religious leaders to engage communities in a bid to end banditry.

“I am here to assure you that we will keep our promise. Next year we will deploy 200 National Police Reservists to maintain peace and put and stop banditry," Kindiki said.

"I want to thank the security officials in this area because the situation has continued to improve and what remains is for political leaders, church leaders, and elders to continue engaging and uniting the community for Tana River to grow."

Kindiki was in Tana River for Senator Danson Mungatana's Thanksgiving Ceremony and the official opening of classrooms at Arap Moi Primary School.

In October, top police commanders visited parts of the troubled Tana River County to assess the security situation there amid deadly inter-clan clashes that claimed 22 lives.

They said their visit to the area was motivated by the recent violence witnessed in Tana River County, which has resulted in displacement of persons and loss of lives.

The police officials visited Anole Primary School and briefed the local community members on measures the government has taken to restore normalcy and ensure that learning activities are uninterrupted.

They called on the locals to work together with security teams to ensure that peace is fully restored.

The police officials ordered the immediate deployment of General Service Unit (GSU) officers to enhance security.
