Nominated Senator Crystal Asige secured a gold medal in the women’s walking race at the 14th Edition of the East Africa Community Inter-Parliamentary Games (EAC-IPG) in Mombasa.
She was the only Person with a Disability to compete in this race, marking a significant milestone for the inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in diverse sports.
"This is a win for every Person with a Disability. It’s proof that we don’t just belong on the sidelines—we belong on the podium," she said.
She emphasised that sports is a powerful tool for integrating Persons with Disabilities into society, breaking down stereotypes, and showcasing their abilities. By promoting inclusion and encouraging participation, sports create opportunities for visibility, dignity, and equal recognition.
Legislators from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, and South Sudan competed for honours in eight diverse disciplines which included tug of war, football, golf, athletics, netball, volleyball, basketball and notably, darts, which was the discipline specifically for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in the competition.
“It is great to have darts as a discipline to ensure that us Parliamentarians with disabilities can also participate in the games, but it’s only one sport which still segregates us to some degree and I don’t like to feel limited."
"That’s why I
pushed myself and decided to get involved in athletics together with my sighted
guide and competed alongside non-disabled women. I feel proud and hope to
improve on my PB (Personal Best) next year," she said.
