The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) has called for changes on an honorary degree certificate issued to Kapseret MP Oscar
Sudi by the Northwestern Christian University-Kenya.
According to the Board, the certificate bears the professional title "Engineer" which is against Sections 26 (1) and (2) of the Engineers Act, 2011.
The Act reserves the use of the style and title "Eng" for Professional and Consulting Engineers who are registered by the Board.
EBK Chief Executive, Eng. Margaret Ogai, said in a letter seen by the Star that the board has already written to relevant authorities for appropriate action.
“The Board has taken swift action by writing to the university and relevant authorities. Northwestern Christian University-Kenya has been advised to recall the honorary degree certificate issued, remove the title "Eng." from the document, and issue a corrected version.
“The inclusion of the title "Eng." in this context is unauthorized and constitutes a breach of Sections 26(3) and 47(2) of the Engineers Act, 2011. These provisions prohibit the use of professional engineering titles by unregistered individuals and prescribe penalties for such violations,” the letter reads in part.
The Engineers Board of Kenya said its decision was as a result of numerous complaints from concerned members of the public regarding the misuse of the professional title "Engineer" in an honorary doctorate certificate.
The honorary doctorate certificate was issued by Northwestern Christian University-Kenya during its 17th graduation ceremony held on December 21, 2024.
EBK said unauthorised use of this title “Engineer” undermines the integrity of the engineering profession and is a punishable offense under the Kenyan Constitution.
The Board remains committed to safeguarding the standards and credibility of the engineering profession in Kenya.
Oscar Sudi has been awarded an honorary degree during a graduation ceremony by the university, which was held at Eldoret Polytechnic.
“I am deeply honoured to receive an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Leadership, Administration, and Management from Northwestern Christian University. This recognition underscores the limitless nature of education—it truly has no limits,” he said.
