A wedding ceremony turned tragic on Friday after the mother to the bride perished in a grisly road accident while on her way to her daughter’s nuptial party.
Amina Ribah Mohamed succumbed to her injuries after the vehicle they had hired to attend the wedding ceremony for her daughter at Kotile division in Ijara Sub County was involved in an accident.
Preliminary reports into the incident according to police sources, indicated that the driver of the Probox van lost control and crashed along Hola and Garissa Road in Tana River County.
Witnesses said the deceased was rushed to Masalani Level Four hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, however, the driver was admitted with a broken hand along with another female passenger.
Residents raised concern over the speed at which public service vehicle operators were driving along the Garissa-Masalani stretch amid reports that some were speeding at more than 120km per hour to make more trips.
Meanwhile, the wedding ceremony was turned into mourning as news of the tragic development spread like bushfire, throwing the entire party into disarray as efforts to lay the mother-in-law in accordance with Islamic tradition took centre
Neither the medical officer in charge of Masalani Referral Hospital, Dr Abdi Malik Ibrahim, nor the officer commanding Hola police station, Mr Ouma Danito, could be reached as their phone went unanswered.
The wedding party later gathered for the burial ceremony at Masalani Muslim cemetery after Friday prayers.
