Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has expressed gratitude to President William Ruto for his support of Raila Odinga's candidacy for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

Speaking in Narok County, Junet voiced optimism about Raila's chances of securing the position, highlighting the significance of Ruto’s backing.

“Sisi kama ODM tunashukuru vile umesaidia baba Raila kwa safari yake ya kwenda AUC,” he said, referring to Raila’s ongoing campaign to lead the AUC.

Junet further stated that it has become clear that whatever President Ruto supports tends to succeed, citing the President’s own political journey and influence.

He expressed confidence that Ruto’s endorsement of Raila would play a crucial role in securing the position.

“Raila winning the AUC chairmanship will be one of Ruto’s enduring legacies,” Junet added, emphasizing the long-term impact that the successful candidacy would have on both Kenya and Africa.

Former Prime Minister Raila has been nominated as a candidate for the AUC chairmanship, a role that oversees the implementation of the African Union's policies and decisions.

His candidacy is backed by several African nations, and his experience in both national and international diplomacy has positioned him as a strong contender for the prestigious position.

Raila’s bid for the AUC chairmanship has been framed as part of Kenya’s broader diplomatic efforts to strengthen its role on the African continent.

The election is expected to take place during the upcoming African Union summit, and Raila’s supporters hope his leadership will bring reforms and development to the continent’s institutions.

A candidate is required to garner votes from at least 34 countries to become the AUC boss.

The nations that have agreed to back Raila’s bid include DRC, Tanzania, Uganda, Somalia, South Africa, Rwanda, Nigeria, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi.

Burundi, Seychelles, Ghana, South Sudan, Guinea-Bissau, Angola, Algeria and the Republic of the Congo have also pledged to support Raila’s bid.

Raila is facing off with Djibouti’s Mohamoud Youssouf and Richard Randriamandrato (Madagascar) for the African Union Commission chairmanship.

The four seek to succeed the outgoing chairman Moussa Faki of Chad. The elections are scheduled for February next year.
