Renown historian  and scholar Prof Bethwel Allan Ogot, who specialises in African history research methods and theory, is dead.

The celebrated scholar died while receiving treat in Kisumu County on January 30, 2025.

The family of the 95-year-old renowned Kenyan scholar says Ogot passed on at a Kisumu hospital after short illness.

Siaya Governor James Orengo is among the leaders who have sent their condolences to the Ogot family.

Orengo has celebrated Prof. Bethwel Ogot as "one of the greatest scholars of our time."

"He has left a legacy of seminal works and historical treatises. A true thinker and intellectual par excellence. He now “belongs to the ages.". Rest in eternal peace," Orengo said.

Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda, in his condolences, said, "I am deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Prof. Bethwel Ogot, whose exceptional scholarship and intellectual contributions have left a lasting legacy. My heartfelt condolences to his family and all who were priviledged to know him. Rest in Peace."

Huma Rights Defender Al-Amin Kimathi said the demise of Ogot is devastating, making this a quite grim season.

"Devastating news of the passing on today of the preeminent Kenyan historian and a giant of African history, Prof Bethwell Allan Ogot (born 3 August 1929). Verily, from The Almighty God we all come, and to Him we return," Kimathi wrote on his X account.

Ogot will be remembered as a great thinker with distinction, and he leaves behind a legacy of his magnum opus in historical treatises.
