One killed, dozens left homeless in separate Nairobi fires

 One person was killed in several fire incidents reported in Nairobi.

Police said dozens of people were left homeless in the incidents reported on Sunday night.

In one of the incidents, the body of Erick Kariuki, 34, was found in a house that had been flattened by a fire in Mwiki area.

Police said the man, who is a tout in the area, was alone in the house during the fire incident.

The fire broke out at about 5 pm on Sunday before spreading to other structures near there.

Nairobi regional police commander George Sedah said about 10 other people were affected by the fire.

He said they are yet to establish the cause of the fire but investigators are on ground for more information.

The remains of the victim were moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other procedures.

Police said the cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Property of unknown value was destroyed before fire engines arrived to contain the spread of the fire.

In Tena, Umoja area, structures hosting garages were burnt in another fire incident. A fire engine rushed to the scene and managed to contain the spread.

No injuries were reported but property of unknown value was destroyed, police said.

In Nyayo estate, a fire broke out in one of the houses there, burning down a mattress and other valuables.

The owner of the house said the fire broke out in the bedroom following an electric fault.

The fire was contained before it spread to other areas.

Sedah said another fire was reported in Mathare and it affected structures, leaving several people homeless.

Sedah said police are investigating the incidents to take necessary action adding some of them had been linked to illegal power connections.

“We have asked Kenya Power officials to join in the probe and take necessary action where necessary,” he said.

Some of those whose structures were flattened were reconstructing them on Monday amid a probe. Police said the sites are crime scenes.
