Rains to continue through February to June – Met
Occasional rainfall may still be experienced in February.
NDMU stated that there will be continuous monitoring and communication of early warning and disaster risk information.
In Summary
The National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) has advised the public to seize the opportunity for good rain performance to maximise water harvest and enhance rain-fed crop production.
NDMU was referring to the March-April–May rains.
It also called upon the national and sub-national stakeholders to leverage anticipatory action (AA) to mitigate the likely negative impacts of rains.
During the rainy season, NDMU said the affected areas will experience isolated storms across the country, episodes of floods/flash floods in the western parts and prolonged dry spells in the eastern parts of the country.
The rains will however have positive aspects, being the likely good rain performance over the western part of the country.
This presents an opportunity for water harvesting, enhanced rain-fed crop produce and recharge of water reservoirs.
NDMU stated that there will be continuous monitoring and communication of early warning and disaster risk information, including monthly, weekly, daily and extreme weather event advisories.
This are set to be released from time to time by the Kenya Meteorological Department, National Disaster Management Unit and the National Police Services.
During the rain period, temperatures are likely to be warmer than average over the whole country, with higher probabilities over parts of the Northeastern, Coast, Southeastern, and Highlands East of the Rift Valley.
According to MET, the season will bring with it above-average rainfall over the Lake Victoria Basin, South Rift Valley, most of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the southern parts of the Southeastern lowlands and the extreme northern parts of northwestern Kenya.
Further, near to below average rainfall is expected over Central Rift Valley, Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi County), most of Northwest, Coastal region, Southeastern lowlands and isolated areas over the Highlands West of the Rift Valley.
Met stated that below average rainfall is expected over the northeastern and over the north coast parts of Kenya.
Occasional rainfall may still be experienced in February.
