The late Baringo Senator William Cheptumo. /FILEDeputy President Kithure Kindiki has joined the country's leadership in mourning Baringo Senator William Cheptumo who died this Sunday.
The lawmaker succumbed to undisclosed ailment at the Nairobi Hospital. He was 58.
In his message of solace to family, friends and Baringo constituents, Kindiki described Cheptumo as a distinguished senator who will be remembered as a dignified leader who chose his words carefully in public and private conversations.
"Amiable, professional and calm, Senator Cheptumo brought out the best attributes expected of a cultured lawyer and public officer," Kindiki said on X.
Cheptumo was a seasoned politician and public servant with stellar career accolades.
He represented the people of Baringo North in the National Assembly twice before he was elected the Senator of Baringo in the last election.
During that period, he served as an Assistant Minister, chair of the Justice and Legal Affairs committee in the National Assembly, and chair of the National Security committee in the Senate.
He also served as chair of the Security Committee in Senate where he was involved in the search for peace and cohesion in the country and made immense contribution towards the fight against cattle rustling.
"He worked hard all the time he served as the Member of Parliament for Baringo North and later as a Senator. He gave quality representation to his constituents," Kindiki said.
"I mourn with his family, friends, the people of Baringo county and the Senate on the passing on of a friend, colleague and a great son of Kenya," he added.
Chair of the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) Eliud Kinuthia described Cheptumo as a dedicated leader who was deeply passionate about the welfare of police officers and committed to advancing reforms in the National Police Service.
"His contributions to the security sector and the nation at large will be greatly missed. The nation and the security sector has indeed lost a remarkable leader. On behalf of the Commission, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, the people of Baringo county, the Senate, and the nation as a whole," Kinuthia said.
Cheptumo was also mourned by his colleagues in the National Assembly and the Senate, with Majority leader Kimani Ichung'wah describing him as a dedicated and selfless leader whose commitment to public service and the people of Baringo was unwavering.
"Having had the honour of serving alongside him in the 11th and 12th Parliament, I witnessed firsthand his integrity, humility, and tireless efforts in championing justice, equality, and development for his constituents. His departure is a great loss not only to his family and the people of Baringo but also to the entire nation," Ichung'wah said.
"My deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and the people of Baringo during this difficult time. May God grant you strength, peace, and comfort. Hon. Cheptumo’s legacy will forever be remembered. May his soul rest in eternal peace."
