Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei now wants the National Dialogue Committee (Nadco) report implemented fully after Raila Odinga’s defeat at the just concluded African Union Commission chairmanship elections.
Raila lost to Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mahamoud Ali Youssouf.
According to the legislator, this should be done by amending the Constitution of Kenya, to create the position of a Prime Minister.
He went on to say that Raila should be allowed to serve the country in that capacity, insisting that his experience and leadership should not be allowed to waste away.
"We must now fully implement the NADCO Report by amending the Constitution 2010 to create the office of the Prime Minister (PM) and allow Baba Raila Odinga to serve Kenyans in that capacity,” Cherargei said on X.
The Senator noted that doing this is the only way Kenya can reward Raila for his role in championing democracy and the rule of law.
“We cannot allow such brilliant leadership and experience to go to waste the way the Africa Union did it.
“This is the only way we can appreciate and reward him for his fight for the rule of law and democracy in Kenya. Blessed week ahead.”
Nadco was co-chaired by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka from the Azimio Coalition and Kimani Ichung'wah from the Kenya Kwanza Coalition.
Of the five key recommendations made after weeks of deliberations and submissions from members of the public and professional bodies, Nadco recommended the formation of the establishment of the Office of the Leader of the Official Opposition with at least two deputies.
This would be the leader of the largest party or coalition of political parties that garnered the second-greatest number of votes in the immediately preceding presidential elections.
The Nadco report further recommended the establishment of the Office of Prime Minister who would be nominated and upon approval by the National Assembly, appointed by the President.
Other recommendations included an audit of the 2022 Electoral Process, the cost of living, entrenching of funds into the constitution, and fidelity to the law on multiparty democracy.
