The Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) has mourned the Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association Chairman (KEPSHA) national chairman Johnson Matheka Nzioka, following his death on Sunday evening.
Nzioka passed away in a road accident on Mombasa Road near Athi River.
In a statement, TSC CEO Nancy Macharia described Nzioka as undoubtedly one of Kenya's most respected academic stalwarts, who had for 38 years served diligently as an ebullient and dedicated teacher under the Commission.
“His incredible academic performance and commitment to service saw Nzioka rise, most deservedly, from the position of classroom teacher in 1987 to Headship in 2012,” she added.
Till his demise, the Kepsha boss was the headteacher of Donholm Primary and Junior Secondary Schools in Nairobi.
Macharia stated that Nzioka’s peerless delivery of service led him to a litany of professional achievements and successes, the apex of which was his election as the national chairman of the more than 23,000-member KEPSHA.
“In the death of Nzioka, Kenya has lost one of its most gallant academic soldiers, a man who will be deeply missed by the teaching fraternity and the entire education sector,” she stated.
Sending condolences to Nzioka’s family and friends, the CEO wished them courage and peace during this time of mourning.
Police said his four-wheel drive vehicle
crashed into a moving trailer on the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway as he swerved
to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming car.
He died on the spot. The body was moved to
the mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations.
It is suspected he was also speeding during the accident as he raced towards Nairobi.
Police have since launched an investigation into the crash.
KEPSHA Treasurer Kennedy Kyeva confirmed earlier that Nzioka's body will be moved to Lee Funeral Home on Monday.
Nzioka took over as KEPSHA’s Acting National Chairperson following the retirement of Nicholas Gathemia on March 3, 2021.
