‘Igwe, Igwe, Igwe’ chants marked the beginning of a consultative meeting between Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and leaders from Meru County on Tuesday.
In a video seen by the Star, as the meeting started and Kindiki stood to walk to the podium, he was met with a standing ovation from the leaders.
As he got to the podium, the leaders comprised of elected, professionals and religious leaders started chanting Igwe.
“Igwe, igwe, igwe, igwee,” they were heard chanting.
Igwe is a Nigerian word that refers to a King. It is a title used consistently throughout northern Igbo-speaking areas.
The Deputy President then asked the leaders to take their seats as he paused in awe for some seconds.
“Thank you, Thank you very much. Naomba tuketi… Waah… alar. Karibuni sana,” Kindiki said before he started making his remarks.
The meeting was held at his official residence in Karen, Nairobi.

During the consultative engagement, the leaders discussed priority development projects and the implementation of National and County government programmes.
It follows an earlier meeting on Tuesday where he was briefed by the representatives of the Meru Catholic Diocese on the preparations for the episcopal ordination of Monsignor Jackson Murugara, Co-adjutor Bishop-Elect, Catholic Diocese of Meru on March 19, 2025.
Kindiki said the government acknowledges and appreciates the role of the Catholic Church and the religious community in initiating development programmes in education, health and water, for the welfare and socio-economic growth of the people.
“We urge the church to continue praying for the unity, safety and stability of our Country.”
Meru is the eighth county delegation the DP is meeting in Karen, since becoming the second-in-command.
