Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua met with Wiper
leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Wednesday amid growing speculation about a potential
alliance ahead of the 2027 elections.
The meeting, held at a Nairobi hotel, was also attended by DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa, signaling the possible formation of a new political coalition.
This was the first formal discussion between the three leaders as they explored ways to strengthen their political engagement and unveil a fresh alliance ahead of the next general elections.
Gachagua’s recent engagements indicate a shifting political landscape.
On January 28, he attended the launch of DAP-K’s new Chui Headquarters in Nairobi, further fueling speculation about his future political alliances.
During the event, Gachagua took a swipe at President William Ruto, accusing him of betraying their initial political agreements.
“We sat him down and assured him we would do everything possible to take him to State House. But once we got there, he abandoned everything we had agreed upon—the 47 county investment charters, clearing pending bills to inject money into circulation—he forgot it all,” Gachagua claimed.
He also dismissed corruption allegations leveled against him by Kenya Kwanza, questioning Ruto’s moral authority on the issue.
“He goes to Western Kenya and says Rigathi Gachagua was removed because he is corrupt. William Ruto, my friend, do you have the moral authority to speak about corruption? Look in the mirror before making such claims,” Gachagua retorted.
Gachagua’s meeting with Kalonzo and Wamalwa comes just days
after he postponed the launch of his new party to May. While details of their
discussions remain unclear, speculation is rife that the talks were linked to
their joint strategy for 2027.
At the same time, Gachagua has intensified efforts to unite the Mount Kenya region and solidify his political base.
As part of this push, he has aligned himself with former Justice Minister Martha Karua, the leader of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP), formerly NARC-Kenya.
On January 25, Gachagua held a high-profile meeting with Karua at her home in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County. He was accompanied by several lawmakers, including Gathoni Wamuchomba (Githunguri MP), Jane Kihara (Naivasha MP), Wanjiku Muhia (Kipipiri MP) and James Murango (Kirinyaga Senator).
The delegation carried symbolic gifts, including goats,
sheep, and farm produce, indicating a possible warming of ties between the two
leaders.
As Gachagua continues to assert his influence, his growing alliances with Kalonzo, Wamalwa, and Karua suggest an emerging political formation that could challenge Ruto’s dominance in 2027.
