President William Ruto on Wednesday held talks with United Nations General Assembly President Philemon Yang on the need to reform the United Nations Security Council to improve fair representation.
“Kenya will work with the Committee of 10, which is advocating reform of the UN Security Council, to ensure that Africa achieves fair representation," said Ruto
“It is also crucial to reform the UN Security Council to make it more representative and more democratic as it makes crucial decisions."
Furthermore, Ruto congratulated Yang for his stewardship, which led to the adoption of the United Nations Pact of the Future.
The meeting at State House saw the President outline the importance of the pact, saying that it will help reposition the global agency to deal with the challenges of global governance and an unfair international financial architecture.

As of last year, Ruto called for bold reforms at the United Nations Security Council to tackle the rapidly evolving global challenges
The President said the current multilateralism system of that time had proven inadequate in addressing crises such as climate change, inequality, and debt and continues to falter in providing any, let alone timely, solutions.
He pointed out that, without immediate action, humanity will face an unprecedented global crisis.
“Today, we have no choice but to reject outdated systems and re-imagine a framework of international cooperation that works for all 8 billion people,” said Ruto.

The President explained it was time the historical injustice of Africa’s lack of permanent representation on the UN Security Council was addressed as a matter of justice in the ongoing UN reforms.
In June of 2024, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi called for a united voice in propagating Africa’s position on United Nations Security Council reforms.
He said Africa must be ready and open to pragmatically and strategically considering all approaches that will ensure the reform process recognises and treats the continent’s quest as an exceptional and priority case.
