Panic has gripped the University of Embu following the death of two students within a week, raising concern about their safety and mental wellness.

On Saturday, the body of a 22-year-old male student was found floating in a dam within the university compound.

The student had been reported missing for some days until his body was discovered floating by fellow students on Saturday morning.

Two days before, on Thursday, another young male student was found dangling on a tree within the university precincts.

The circumstances surrounding the two deaths remain unclear.

Embu West Subcounty Police Commander Zacharia Omae confirmed the incidents, stating that they have launched investigations to establish the cause of the deaths.

"We have identified the second victim as a 22-year-old second-year student, who had been reported missing by his family at Kangaru Police Station," Omae said.

Omae assured the public that investigations are ongoing to determine whether foul play was involved.

"We urge students and residents to remain calm as we conduct thorough inquiries. Additionally, we encourage anyone struggling with personal challenges to seek help and support," he added.

The deaths have sent shockwaves through the university community, prompting calls for enhanced security measures and improved mental health support.

"It is crucial to strengthen security measures and enhance mental health programmes to support students," Omae emphasised.

Police are appealing to anyone with relevant information to come forward as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the family of the second victim arrived at the University demanding answers but urged to wait until a postmortem is carried out to establish the cause of death.

The body was taken to Embu level five hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem scheduled for Monday.
