Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen now says that the government has put in place at least six measures to curb insecurity in Kirinyaga County.

Speaking on Wednesday, Murkomen, who had appeared before the Senate to respond to questions raised by Senators, said this followed several incidents that were reported in Kerugoya and Ngurubani towns within the county.

According to Murkomen, police have increased Patrols and Rapid Response in the county.

“The National Police Service intensified both foot and mobile patrols in Kerugoya town and its environs, focusing on early morning and late evening hours when incidents were most frequent,” he said.

The CS went on to say that the police have also arranged continuous special operations to rid the areas of criminals and have conducted regular public security meetings to inform residents about emerging crime trends and preventive measures.

He noted that also incorporated is a multi-agency coordination between the police, National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), other security agencies and the public.

This, he said, will help build confidence in security efforts.

Also included are targeted investigations.

“Collaborations were strengthened with Community Policing groups, Nyumba Kumi initiatives and private security firms to facilitate information sharing for effective security management.

“Specialized units were deployed to conduct thorough investigations, leading to the arrest and prosecution of criminals,” Murkomen said.

On the long-term measures put in place, the CS said plans are underway to enhance collaboration between police officers and local communities through Nyumba Kumi and community policing programs.

Other measures are using technology to combat crime, Capacity building for officers, addressing socioeconomic drivers of crime and enhanced intelligence surveillance.

He also said they look to improve the legal and judicial processes, strengthening Public-Private Partnerships and conducting periodic security audits.

“The Government is committed to implementing long-term measures to enhance security and maintain law and order in Kerugoya town and its surrounding areas,” Murkomen added.

The questions had been raised by Kirinyaga Senator James Murango.
