THE Ministry of Education has held discussions with union representatives to deliberate on the collective bargaining agreement for Technical University of Kenya (TUK) workers.

The representatives were from the Technical University of Kenya, the University Academic Staff Union and Kenya Universities Staff Union.

The TUK workers’ strike has been on for three weeks, urging the government to effect the 2021-2025 CBA for TUK workers.

Last week, students held demonstrations to express concerns that the prolonged workers’ strike had disrupted their learning, resulting in the indefinite closure of the institution last week.

Speaking to the press after a boardroom meeting with the union officials at the ministry headquarters, Education CS Julius Ogamba said the ministry has developed a sustainable agreement framework to facilitate a structured return-to-work formula for the TUK workers.

Ogamba highlighted key areas of discussion including the return-to-work formula, increasing student enrollment, improving the organisational structure and strengthening overall university.

The CS further said the ministry has presented a proposal to the unions, outlining both short-term and long-term solutions for consideration.

Additionally, Ogamba emphasised the government’s commitment to preventing future strikes by implementing proactive measures across all universities.
