The government has banned all activities at the Titanic Dam in Juja, popularly known as 'park and chill' spot.

The move was made following the drowning of two students from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) while they were swimming.

The decision comes after a recent inspection of the site by the Juja security team which was led by Assistant County Commissioner Mwangi wa Mwangi.

The authorities have formed a team of officers from various departments to ensure no one drowns.

“We have sat as a team and all agreed that we need to address this situation because we do not want any other lives lost here,” Mwangi said.

“That is why we have put the team together, and going forward, I know that what has happened in the past will be history; it will not be repeated.”

He said the ban extends to the area within a 100-metre radius but does not affect the licensed operators.

"The rest, civilians and students are banned from accessing the area. We put stationed police officers to surveil the area," he added.

Addressing the press, another official expressed their regret that the two students did not know that they were in danger of drowning.

"I want to urge the residents of this area to warn anyone coming in for a swim," a man said.

A police report revealed that the dam has claimed the lives of four individuals in 2025, including a highly trained GSU officer attached to the Recce squad.

The two students who drowned were identified as Abel Ontuga Mikaye and Dansteph Matoke.

The bodies of the victims were recovered by divers from Kiambu County and later taken to the General Kago Funeral Home in Thika.

The Titanic Dam hit the headlines in January 2023 when a vehicle plunged into the water, killing both the driver and passenger.

Witnesses said the two were at the dam for over an hour before the incident occurred.

It was suspected that the couple had been under the influence of alcohol, which may have caused them to accidentally release the vehicle’s handbrake while parked near the edge of the dam.
