

The Commission for University Education (CUE) has published a list of 79 universities authorised to operate in Kenya.
In a notice seen by the Star, the Commission urged students to always verify institutions before enrolling for degree programs.
CUE also listed at least 15 institutions across various parts of the country that are offering degree programmes without the grant of authority to operate.
“For avoidance of doubt, any institution operating as a university or degree awarding and which does not appear on the Commission list of approved institutions is illegal and their degree will not be recognized in Kenya,” the Commission for University Education said.
In the list, 35 public universities including the University of Nairobi, Moi University, Kenyatta University, Egerton University, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Maseno, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology and Dedan Kimathi University of Technology.
Chuka, Technical University of Kenya, Technical University of Mombasa, Pwani, Kisii, University of Eldoret, Maasai Mara, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, Laikipia, South Eastern Kenya University, Meru University of Science and Technology and Multimedia University of Kenya are also on the list.
Others are the University of Kabianga, Karatina, Kibabii, Rongo, Taita Taveta, Co-operative University of Kenya, Murang’a University of Technology, University of Embu, Machakos, Kirinyaga, Garissa, Alupe, Kaimosi Friends, Tom Mboya and Tharaka Nithi University.
CUE also recognised 28 private chartered universities, including the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), Daystar University, Scott Christian University, Strathmore University, United States International University, Africa Nazarene, Kenya Methodist, St. Paul’s University, and the Pan Africa Christian University.
Kabarak University, Mount Kenya University, Africa International University, Kenya Highlands University, Great Lakes University of Kisumu, KCA University, Adventist University of Africa, KAG EAST University, Umma University, Presbyterian University of East Africa, Aga Khan University, Kiriri Women’s University of Science and Technology, The East African University, Zetech University, Lukenya University, Management University of Africa, Tangaza University and Islamic University of Kenya.
In addition to the fully accredited universities, the commission acknowledged three specialized public universities, namely the National Defence University-Kenya, the Open University of Kenya, and the National Intelligence and Research University.
Five public university constituent colleges also made it to the list, including Turkana University College, Bomet University College, Koitaleel University College, Mama Ngina University College, and the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.
There were also two accredited Private University constituent colleges, namely Hekima University College and Marist International University College.
The Commission also granted letters of interim authority to six institutions that are still in the process of obtaining full accreditation.
These include GRETSA University, Riara University, Pioneer International University, International Leadership University, and AMREF International University.
