Efforts ongoing to find missing Kenyan officer in Haiti – Kanja

The officer was part of MSS convoy that was ambushed by gangs on Tuesday.

Police have confirmed that a second Kenyan police officer who went missing in Haiti is yet to be found.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja said efforts are ongoing to trace him.

The officer was reported missing on Tuesday after the Kenyan convoy of Multinational Security Support (MSS) was ambushed by gangs.

Gang members attacked the officers as they were helping a Haitian national police vehicle that was stuck in a ditch, suspected to have been dug by the gangs.

Speaking on Sunday when he joined Muslim faithful for Eid prayers at Business Bay Square (BBS) Mall in Eastleigh, Nairobi, Kanja said Kenyans will be updated once the status of the missing officer are established.

"Tulikuwa na ofisa wetu ambaye ako missing na bado tunazidi kumtafuta na tutampata. Tukimpata tutawajulisha," he said.

On Wednesday, the National Police Service said the MSS, in collaboration with the Haitian National Police (HNP), was actively conducting a search and rescue operation to locate the missing officer.

Meanwhile on Friday, the government of Haiti revealed the identy of the Kenyan police officer who was killed by a gang as Benedict Kabiru.

He was part of the MSS convoy that was ambushed on Tuesday in Savien.

Haiti President Fritz Alphonse Jean described Kabiru as a valiant police officer who made the ultimate sacrifice for a better future for the Caribbean country.

“The Presidential Transitional Council extends its deepest condolences to the government and people of Kenya, as well as to the family of Bénédict Kabiru, who fell on March 25, in Savien while carrying out his mission,” a statement by the PTC said.

“This valiant police officer, engaged alongside Haitian forces in the fight against insecurity, made the ultimate sacrifice for a better future for our country. His bravery and commitment will never be forgotten.”

He vowed to pursue the armed criminals who shot Kabiru dead, further promising to hold them accountable for their actions before the courts.

Kenyan authorities have since deployed specialised teams to recover his body, which remains in the custody of gangs.

Meanwhile, Kanja reiterated that the US has not stopped funding to the MSS despite the recent series of executive orders by President Trump to slash foreign funding.
