The Kenya Prisons Service has announced the recruitment of prison constables, both men and women, on April 30, 2025.
Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick Aranduh said candidates must be Kenyan citizens, have valid National Identity card, have no criminal record, and have Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) minimum grade of D+ and above.
“The candidates should be between the ages of 18 and 28 years, be at least 5 feet 4 inches tall for men and 5 feet and 2 inches tall for women, be physically and mentally fit and must have good hearing and clear vision,” he said.
Aranduh noted that the female candidates must not be pregnant at the time of recruitment or during the initial training period.
On recruitment, candidates will undergo a para-military initial training lasting not less than nine months.
“The recruitment exercise will be absolutely free. Bribery and other acts of corruption are unlawful," he warned.
“Any person presenting themselves for recruitment with falsified or fake academic/professional certificates, identity cards, or engaging in any acts that amount to corruption shall be disqualified, and prosecuted.”
Aranduh further stated that recruitment will only be conducted at the listed recruitment centers and on the day indicated.
He stated that prospective candidates must carry their original National Identification card, birth certificate, KRA PIN certificate, academic certificates and other testimonials on the day of recruitment.
The roles of a KPS constable include custody and supervision of inmates, maintaining security and order, and escorting duties either to the court, hospitals or other facilities safely and securely.
A constable is also mandated to assist in rehabilitation programs such as education, vocational training and religious activities, and encouraging good behavior and discipline among inmates.
Further, they are expected to keep records of inmate movements, behavior and incidents, and write reports for superiors about incidents or routine activities.
They also handle support services - assisting in logistics like food distribution, medical attendance, and hygiene maintenance – and community reintegration support.
Interested candidates are, therefore, invited to attend the recruitment exercise at the centers indicated:
