Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Wednesday met Gikomba traders who lost property to a deadly fire on Tuesday last week.
In the meeting held at his official residence in Karen, Nairobi, Kindiki said the President has already directed thorough investigations and a comprehensive report on long-term solutions to the rampant fires in Gikomba and Toi Markets to be submitted.
He went on to say the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura) and Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) have also been directed to immediately embark on the construction of expanded access roads in Gikomba, Muthurwa, and Toi Markets to facilitate easier movement of people and goods.
Kindiki assured the traders that the Kenya Kwanza administration is determined to modernize trade and dignify traders so that they can work in a place that is up to standard with all the required amenities.
On April 1, Gikomba traders woke up to losses after a fire razed their stalls.
The fire broke out in the 'Kwa Mbao' area near the fire station at around 3 am, destroying at least 500 businesses.
The fire extended to a section of a nearby bus station.
