Boda Boda Riders in Embu town have a reason to smile after receiving a Sh3 million donation from President William Ruto.
The donation came following a request from Governor Cecily Mbarire to the President to support them in his recent visit of the county during his weeklong development tour of Mt Kenya Region.
Speaking while handing over the funds to the riders’ leadership on Thursday in the company of area (Kirimari Ward) MCA Ibrahim Swaleh, Governor Mbarire thanked the president for keeping his pledge
She said the funds will go a long way in supporting various economic empowerment initiatives being undertaken by different groups in the sector.
“The sectors play a vital role in driving our economy and as a government, we are committed to empowering them through targeted economic programmes to ensure continuous growth,” she said.
MCA Swaleh asked the riders to make good use of the funds by investing in income-generating activities.
“We are hoping the funds will leave a lasting mark in the lives of our boda boda operators through proper investment,” he said.
The operator's Chair, Benjamin Mukundi, pointed out that they had identified some key projects, such as starting a filling station.
“We have asked the governor to assist us in securing a piece of land for that purpose and we are hopeful that we will get one soon,” he said.
The President also made a pledge to support porters commonly known as “beba beba” with Sh1.5 million to buy carts.
The donation has also been delivered to the group.
