The Cabinet has approved the opening of a Kenyan consulate in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to support its peacekeeping and diplomatic missions in the Caribbean.

In a Desptach released on April 29, the Cabinet said the move reinforces Kenya’s “commitment to promoting global peace and security.”

The consulate will also provide strategic support to Kenya’s leadership role in helping restore order in Haiti.

The new development shows that Kenya's growing global engagement has taken a fresh turn with the establishment of a consulate in Port-au-Prince, marking a new chapter in its relationship with Haiti.

The consulate is set to offer vital support services to Kenyan nationals and boost trade ties between the two nations.

Among its core functions, the diplomatic office will assist Kenyans abroad with key services such as passport renewals, emergency travel documentation, and registering citizens residing or working in the host country.

For those facing emergencies — including crime, accidents, or other distressing situations — the consulate will serve as a crucial point of contact, offering advice and assistance, including potential evacuations when needed.

In addition to consular duties, the mission will play a strategic role in advancing Kenya’s economic diplomacy.

It will facilitate trade and investment discussions, and share information on market opportunities that can benefit both countries.

Diplomatic ties between Nairobi and Port-au-Prince were formalised in September 2023, when Kenya and Haiti announced their intention to exchange ambassadors.

A joint communiqué issued at the time emphasized their shared commitment to building stronger bilateral relations based on friendship, mutual respect, and shared goals.

That announcement came shortly before Kenya took on a leadership role in a UN-backed peace support mission in Haiti. Since then, Kenyan police officers have been deployed to help stabilise the nation, which has struggled with chronic gang violence and political instability.

Kenyan forces were also instrumental in securing the reopening of Port-au-Prince's main international airport, which had been shut down for months.
