The death of Veteran radio host Edward Kwach on Monday night has thrown the media industry into mourning yet again, being the latest of a couple of others to have hit the fourth estate recently.
According to the family, Kwach, 44, died following a short illness.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved son and brother, Carey, that occurred last night, 28th April 2025, while receiving treatment for meningitis,” the family statement read.
Earlier this month, Kwach was admitted to Coptic Hospital in critical condition.
Well-wishers were urged to donate blood to help stabilise the radio personality’s condition.
Until his death, Kwach worked as a radio host at Standard Media Group's Spice FM.
Kwach initially pursued law before transitioning to media in the early 2000s, where he captivated audiences in his stints at Capital FM, Homeboyz Radio, Kiss FM, EA FM and Nation FM.
He also worked at Urban Radio in Kisumu, where he co-hosted the breakfast show alongside Chris Okinda and Brian Oduor.
Kwach was candid about the challenges he faced throughout his career, including issues related to fame, entitlement and alcohol.
In a letter to his younger self in 2021, he acknowledged that these factors contributed to job losses and personal struggles.
“There are things that will happen to you during your stint at Radio Africa that will change everything in your career. Because you will be doing daft things. Daft things involving alcohol and hubris. Don’t. You will lose your job and you will regret it until you land another job at East Africa Radio in Tanzania,” he wrote.
“The words' celebrity and fame will continue to hound you. It will be very difficult to comprehend fame and celebrity. There will be a point where you will be the number one, you will have the number one show on the radio and on TV. You will be the number one EMCEE and the most sought-after voice. Some days you will embrace it, and on others, you will shun it. Fame will bring stubbornness, entitlement. It will see you languish in many police cells because of your history with the police, you will imagine they are picking on you. But you will also get a lot of commercial work.”
Kwach was engaged to his long-term sweetheart, Dee Muigai, a former model and entrepreneur. The couple announced their engagement in 2014.
