Friends eulogise Kasavuli as an eloquent lady

Kasavuli passed away on December 29, after battling with cancer.

The requiem mass for deceased TV queen Catherine Kasavuli took place on Thursday.

The church service was held at the Friends International Church along Ngong Road.

Catherine, the fourth child of Ezekiel Kasavuli Agingu and Rachel Inyangara Kasavuli was born on February 22, 1962.

She grew up in Nairobi West for most of her young life.

Catherine was described by those close to her as a bright, expressive and eloquent young girl with an enthusiastic sense of humor.

She briefly attended Langata Road Primary School before settling at Nairobi South Primary School between 1969 and 1975, where she finished her primary school education.

Catherine not only excelled academically, but also in athletics- 100 metres sprint race.

Between 1976 and 1979, she attended Ngara Girls High School in Nairobi.

She enjoyed swimming and loved sewing. Growing up, Catherine sewed her own polka dots swimming costume.

From an early age, she was a devout Christian. It is from her love of reading the scripture that she would get the opportunity that would change her life right after high school.

A relative who worked at Voice of Kenya visited the family and was amazed by Catherine's eloquence, confidence and intonation as she read the scripture.

She was one of the youngest presenters at VoK.

While working at VoK, she attended the Kenya institute of Mass Communication between 1980 and 1984.

In 1990, she moved to KTN, becoming part of an elite group of broadcasters.

Catherine mentored other household names such as Jeff Koinange and Michael Oyier, who both passed through her hands at KTN.

After 17 years at KTN, she joined the Royal Media Services in 2007.

She then left RMS to set up the Kasavuli Media Group in 2015.

Being good at her work for more than three decades, she was awarded the Order of the Grand Warrior medal by president Mwai Kibaki in 2008 in recognition of her outstanding service.

In 2021, she made a come back to TV, joining the prime time Legends edition news.

Catherine was a single mother to Martin Agingu Kasavuli.

Kasavuli passed away on the night of December 29, 2022, aged 60.

She had been battling cancer.

Kasavuli had been admitted at the Kenyatta National Hospital since October 26.

In November, colleagues and friends in the media industry mobilised people to donate blood for urgent transfusion.

The final service for her send off will take place in her rural home at Tigoi Primary School on Saturday, January 14.
