Floods
Many parts of the world have faced floods this year with Spain being one of the most affected countries. The death toll from these floods is over 229 in Valencia.
Many other countries including Thailand and Malaysia, South Sudan, Kenya, Sudan and Tanzania, among many others.
The floods have mostly been attributed to be a result of climate change across the Globe.
Heat waves
Heat waves have also been recorded in several regions across the world, including in parts of Africa.
In April 2024, temperatures in Mali rose above 48C during an extreme heatwave across the Sahel region of Africa which was linked to increased hospitalisations and deaths.
India also experienced heat waves that also led to over 733 deaths in some parts of the country.
Several parts of Europe have also experienced the same.
Earthquakes
While not many African countries experience this, save for tremors, Earthquakes have continued to occur in other places across the world. Japan is one country that gave a week-long warning for a mega earthquake it would however be lifted.
In August 2024, California was hit by an earthquake and in October A 5.9-magnitude quake struck the city of Elazig in Turkey's Malatya province. However, no injuries were reported.
A minor earthquake was also recorded in Culdaff, County Donegal, on school equipment in the Republic of Ireland.
In May 2024, Homes were evacuated and many schools closed after a flurry of earthquakes hit the area around Naples in southern Italy.
In April, Taiwan was also hit by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake near the eastern county of Hualien, killing nine and injuring more than 1,000. Over 600 people remained trapped under the rubble according to officials.
Wildfires
The ever-increasing wildfires have been attributed to climate change
Several South American countries are currently experiencing their worst droughts on record, which is also fuelling several wildfires. Parts of the United States including California experienced wildfires.
Canada also experienced wildfires this year among other European countries.
Mpox
Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox), an infectious disease typically found in parts of Central and Western Africa, has again been labelled a global health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO).
At least sixteen countries on the African continent have reported mpox cases.
The most affected country in 2024 continues to be the Democratic Republic of the Congo (6169 confirmed cases, 25 deaths), followed by Burundi (987 confirmed cases, no deaths) and Nigeria (94 confirmed cases, no deaths), among other countries including Kenya.
Typhoons
A super typhoon made a second landfall on the Philippines' main island of Luzon, with forecasters warning of a "life-threatening storm surge", heavy rains and severe winds.
Man-Yi, known locally as Pepito, first touched down on the country’s eastern Cantanduanes island ON November 16, 2024.
More than a million people had been ordered to evacuate since warnings were first issued.
Man-Yi is the sixth typhoon to hit the Philippines in a month, with at least 160 people known to have died in the five previous storms.
The super typhoon already ripped through Cantanduanes, where it uprooted trees, damaged some buildings and pulled down power lines.
Hurricanes
The Atlantic basin saw 18 named storms in 2024. Eleven of those were hurricanes with winds of 74 mph or greater and five intensified to major hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or greater).
The five hurricanes made landfall in the continental US, with two storms making landfall as major hurricanes.
