In Summary

  • As the law provides, the trial now heads to the Senate where, again, the case will be prosecuted and, again, Gachagua will be handed a chance to defend himself.
  • Gachagua must be in deep distress and thinking about dragging the process for long, hoping the fallout will strengthen his grip on his beloved Mt Kenya.

MPs impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday night after a lengthy and raucous debate.

The day before, Gachagua took the unusual step of defending himself in a two-hour TV press conference in which he dismissed the 11 charges as a witch-hunt engineered by his political enemies.

As the law provides, the trial now heads to the Senate where, again, the case will be prosecuted and, again, Gachagua will be handed a chance to defend himself.

His lawyers will have the chance to cross-examine his accuser and witnesses.

Reports in the media also indicate that Gachagua will likely dash to court to challenge the impeachment decision.

Gachagua must be in deep distress and thinking about dragging the process for long, hoping the fallout will strengthen his grip on his beloved Mt Kenya.

Deep down in his heart, he knows that his relationship with Ruto is at rock bottom. It’s irredeemable.

But as a politician of his stature, he knows that even if the Senate and the courts throw out the case, it is now impossible to get back to work with a boss who does not want him.

Instead of a self-serving, long fight in the courts, Gachagua should resign and save his career, which will almost certainly be blighted by an impeachment at the Senate.
