The proposal by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei to extend the term of elected leaders right from the President to MCA is a bad joke.
The senator wants the leaders given two more years in office from the current five as contained in the constitution.
Five years is enough for a leader worth their salt to deliver and convince voters to extend their mandate.
Why should Kenyans be stuck with one leader for seven years? One wonders what Cherargei’s amendment seeks to cure. Clearly, the Bill is not in good faith but mischief.
Could it be that Cherargei’s Bill is a test balloon by some top leaders who fear openly coming out?
This is how the presidential term extension talks started in Uganda and Rwanda only for the Bill to be rammed through Parliament.
MPs are selfish individuals and easily close ranks on anything that benefits them, and this could just be one of them.
The term of office for our elected leaders should in fact be reviewed downwards to four years to ensure more accountability.
It is not the first time the term extension idea is being broached and as they say, where there is smoke there is definitely fire.
Quote of the Day: "Consider whether you will fight on the right side when the rule of integrity is finally realised. Because that day is coming. As much as integrity, impartiality is a good principle to espouse and a difficult practice to achieve. Yet achieve it you must."
