EDITORIAL
The ongoing fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached alarming levels after M23 rebels, allegedly backed by Rwanda, stormed into Goma, the largest city in the Eastern region.
This escalation is deeply concerning, especially given President Paul Kagame’s previous justification for military intervention to combat perceived threats to his government.
President Félix Tshisekedi’s accusations against Kigali regarding intentions to annex parts of the DRC further complicate an already tense situation.
While both leaders have failed to find common ground, they have been invited to a peace summit in Nairobi—a crucial opportunity to address these escalating tensions.
There is never a justification for using force to resolve disputes. Dialogue is imperative.
Both Kagame and Tshisekedi must engage in meaningful conversations to explore long-term solutions that prioritise the welfare of their citizens over territorial ambitions.
The people of Goma have endured too much suffering and instability.
They deserve peace, security and the chance to live their lives without the shadow of conflict.
It is time for both leaders to put aside their differences and work together.
