In the global film market, Chinese animation has quietly ignited a cultural storm. Ne Zha 2 has not only achieved remarkable box office success in China but has also become the first non-Hollywood production to break into the top ten highest-grossing films of all time.

Now, this rebellious hero is set to arrive in African cinemas, offering a dialogue on courage and destiny.

As of February 19, Ne Zha 2 had surpassed 12.4 billion yuan (approximately 1.71 billion USD) in global box office revenue, setting a new record for animated films and securing its place as the eighth highest-grossing film in cinematic history.

For generations, Ne Zha has been an unforgettable figure in the childhood of every Chinese person, myself included.

He is more than just a hero—he is a symbol of defiance and self-determination.

Unlike traditional righteous figures, Ne Zha was born with the label of an “ominous child.”

Yet, through his innate strength and unyielding will, he dared to challenge authority and ultimately sacrificed himself to protect his people. His story has been passed down for centuries in Chinese culture, inspiring countless individuals to pursue self-determination and defy fate.

In Ne Zha 2, this ancient legend takes on a modern meaning. Director Yang Yu has reimagined the classic character through a unique narrative approach and innovative storytelling, breathing new life into the tale. The film’s release during the Chinese New Year captivated audiences nationwide.

The film’s quality is evident not only in its compelling storytelling but also in its breathtaking visual effects.

With a production cycle of five years, over 4,000 animators contributed to the creation of more than 1,900 special effects shots. More than 130 Chinese animation studios contributed their expertise to bring this film to life., pushing the boundaries of animation technology and achieving a world-class level of detail and visual design.

Ne Zha 2 stays true to the essence of Chinese mythology, incorporating a rich tapestry of traditional cultural elements while exploring themes of friendship, responsibility, and self-discovery.

These themes resonate far beyond China, connecting with audiences worldwide in their pursuit of freedom, courage, and self-identity. The emotions conveyed in this film are universal, transcending cultural and linguistic barriers.

His most famous line, “I am the master of my destiny”, has become an anthem of empowerment for audiences, inspiring them to fight for their fate.

So far, 4.8K IMDb users have rated Ne Zha 2 at 8.3/10, while the audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes has reached an impressive 99%.

Ne Zha’s story shares an intrinsic connection with the traditional narratives of resilience and struggle in African cultures.

Whether in China or Africa, stories about family values, heroism, and the defiance of destiny have a profound impact on audiences. This cross-cultural resonance is at the heart of Ne Zha 2's global success.

The film’s release in Africa will serve as a bridge for cultural exchange, allowing African audiences to explore Chinese mythology and find shared values between our cultures.

In recent years, China and Africa have strengthened cooperation in media, film, and cultural industries. Ne Zha 2 not only demonstrates the international competitiveness of China’s animation industry but also offers valuable inspiration for African filmmakers.

Africa has a rich heritage of mythology and folklore, and by collaborating with Chinese filmmakers, these powerful stories could find their place on the global stage, contributing to the worldwide recognition of African culture.

As Ne Zha 2 prepares to hit theaters across Kenya and other African nations, we warmly invite African audiences to experience this extraordinary film.

More than just entertainment, Ne Zha 2 offers a cultural journey that unites different worlds through shared stories. Looking ahead, I hope to see even greater opportunities for China-Africa collaboration in the film industry, paving the way for a future rich in storytelling and cultural exchange.
