Energy drinks

Energy drinks are popularly used for different occasions.

This includes during sports or when you feel you would like a boost in your energy levels and an increase in alertness.

However, these drinks are not that healthy and could be bad for your heart and health.

The majority of energy drink brands claim that they will boost the immune system, enhance performance and help you feel energized.

Sutter Health, an American publication, highlights different reasons why energy drinks are not that good for our bodies.

1. They are bad for the heart due to their high caffeine levels.

Caffeine is the main ingredient in energy drinks.

It stated that when caffeine is consumed in large quantities of more than 400 milligrams per day it can result in increased blood pressure, heart rhythm disturbances, heart palpitation and increased heart rate.

2. They are harmful to adolescents

Energy drinks are often marketed to young people.

However, they are not advisable for teenagers and adolescents since they are susceptible to the adverse effects of energy drinks because they are still growing and developing.

The health conditions that they can face include mental health conditions such as sleep disorders, cardiovascular nervous system anomalies or depression.

3. Mixing them with alcohol is dangerous

They can alter intoxication levels when mixed with alcohol which makes someone feel less intoxicated and energized while at the same time experiencing signs of alcohol impairment.

Signs that could involve poor coordination, slurred speech and memory impairment.

The risk of chronic diseases such as stroke, liver disease and high blood pressure is high when they are mixed with alcohol.

4. High sugar levels

They contain high sugar levels and excessive sugar intake can cause inflammation.

This could also result in chronic conditions like heart disease, cancer and diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and obesity.
