In Summary

  • • Working out is good for one’s body health, without forgetting the mental bit
  • • If you are not going to the gym, take on yoga, go for a walk, walk to your workplace
Participants turned up to engage in a yoga session at the Sikh Union Club in Nairobi on June 23

I am a gym babe and I faithfully follow my workout plan.

I am also an athlete, by the way.

I, however, still struggle with meal plans because of late, I believe I have reached that point in my life where I can survive on a meal or two and some bitings here and there.

I am still working on it, though. I am slowly getting there.

Yoga joined my workout plan chat, which made me realise that this workout thing is more than just a trend but a way to achieve better health.

Yes, yoga officially joined my workout plan.

I recently attended the International Day of Yoga celebrations put together by the Indian High Commission, and oh my, did I enjoy the session!

By the way, the celebrations usually have a free entry upon registration, so in case you plan to attend, keep an eye out for the celebrations announcement next year. It is usually celebrated on June 21 every year.

I am one individual who easily gets sick and is prone to a lot of medication, but with a good workout, a couple of exercises here and there, I have established that such keeps me well healthwise.

It works for me and I enjoy it even though sometimes it might be tough.

The 45-minute yoga session I attended involved a lot of stretching, deep breathing, meditation and relaxation.

Basically, it is a workout that is full body and mind body as well that improves balance, flexibility and strength.

A team of Indian women did a kind of a yoga dance presentation during the celebrations, and all I can say is those ladies are flexible. I wished to be as flexible as them.

It was a lovely experience as I had time to relax, stretch and unwind.

The day started out chilly but towards mid-morning, the sun was out and it was serene.

The field at the Sikh Union Club had people from all ages, from children to the elderly, giving it their all.

Fitness is personal and I am not going to give advice on what to do and what not to do.

You can find an experienced fitness instructor to guide on coming up with your own workout plan to fit you as an individual.

I think today, there is no Instagram story or TikTok video or WhatsApp status I will watch without coming across three or four people I know constantly posting on their fitness journey.

It is either the gym or aerobics or just normal exercises.

I know a number of you think that is pressure and the fitness wave trend will soon die down, but I believe that it is positive pressure and we should actually be conforming.

Working out is good for one’s body health, without forgetting the mental bit, and it has a couple of positives.

If you are not going to the gym, take on yoga, go for a walk, walk to your workplace, cycle to wherever you are going, go for a morning or evening run, sign up for the 5km or 10km marathon, go for dance classes, swim or even do aerobics.

Keep your body active and build on both physical and mental strength.

Your health is really important, and you are responsible for it becoming better or worse.

It is never too late to start, actually. Working out is not a life or death situation, but make it a culture.

The first few days and weeks might be tough and painful, but with consistency, it becomes a little less painful. The pain is still there, let me not lie to you, but it is worth it.

Back then, our parents saw working out as a luxury, but today, everyone is doing it, and so should you.

It is also not that expensive as where I reside; a one-hour gym workout session costs Sh100 per person without an instructor and Sh200 per person with an instructor.

I can say conform because it has a lot of positive impact to it. Create your blended plan and stick to it. I am now on my week 2 with yoga, and I love it.

Remember, fitness is a choice.
