Italy-based couple Dickson Simba and Teresa Omosa are among high profile athletes who have confirmed their participation in the fourth edition of the Nyamira Great Run today (Friday) at Kiendege secondary.
Simba and Omosa returned from Italy last week, where they participated in several races and have exuded confidence of winning the senior races during the Manga Sub-County Cross Country meeting today.
“It’s good to be home. Even though I have not recovered fully after participating in five events in two months, I will give Friday’s event a try,” said Simba.
He said he will be using the race to prepare for the Nyamira Great Run on December 13.
His wife Omosa also said she will use the race to prepare for the 21kms race. “Friday’s event will be a recovery race for me as I set my eyes on the main event of the series,” she said.
Omosa and Nancy Kerage are favourites to lift the women’s title in the absence of Beatrice Begi, the winner of the Ensoko cross country and and Winfridah Moseti, who won the Nyamira North 10km race.
Moseti travelled to Spain, where she will take part in Madrid Half Marathon while Begi is preparing for Olkalou Cross Country.
Another top athlete in the race is experienced marathoner and pacesetter Sammy Nyokaye who recently participated in the Standard Chartered Marathon in Nairobi.
Nyokaye, who posted 2:16.00 during the race, said: “I have not fully recovered from the marathon but I will take part in the race.”
He will run alongside training mates Paul Machoka, Abel Morang’a and Brian Nyangaresi.
They will, however, face stiff competition from favourite Enock Onchari who won the Ensoko and Masaba North races and finished second in the Nyamira North 10km race two weeks ago.
Stephen Arita winner of Nyamira North 10km is also expected to feature in today’s event.
