Reigning Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) champions Nairobi City Thunder have bolstered their roster by signing Kenyan basketball standout Tylor Ongwae for the upcoming season.

The 6’7 small power forward is expected to bring a wealth of international experience to the Thunder as they prepare to defend their title and chase new heights.

Ongwae, who plied his trade in top leagues across Denmark, Italy, Ivory Coast, New Zealand, Russia, Switzerland, Sweden and the USA is known for his defensive prowess.

Twice named Defensive Player of the Year in the Danish Basketligaen, Ongwae’s arrival is expected to significantly enhance the Thunder’s defensive capabilities.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Tylor Ongwae to the Nairobi City Thunder family,” Nairobi City Thunder general manager, Kooshin Diriye said.

“His skills, leadership and commitment to excellence align perfectly with our team’s values. We believe he will be a key contributor as we pursue our goal of becoming the first Kenyan team to qualify for the BAL qualifiers and continue our success in the KBF.”

On his bit, an elated Ongwae said he is eager to make an impact on home soil.  “I am honoured to have the opportunity to play for the reigning champions in my home country,” Ongwae said.

He shared his excitement about returning home to play for one of Kenya’s top teams.

“I am eager to contribute to the team's winning culture and bring my best to the court in every game. I share the team's ambition to make history and compete at the highest level in Africa."

With Ongwae on board, Thunder are poised to make a strong push not only for a repeat KBF title but also for a historic qualification to the Basketball Africa League (BAL).

His basketball journey began at Lewis University in Illinois, where he quickly gained recognition for his strong performances, paving the way for a professional career that spanned several prestigious leagues across the globe.

Fans can anticipate a season of dynamic play and heightened defensive intensity with him in the lineup.
