Nyamira Girls confident of defending girls' hockey title

Nyamira Girls got their hunt for the hockey title back on track after beating former champions Kakungulu Memorial 1-0 in the ongoing East Africa Secondary School Games at Mbale School of Hygiene.

Stephanie Seba scored the all-important goal for the regional defending champions. Nyamira coach Dennis Kigai said: "We lost the first game which mathematically put us in a precarious position. We went back to the drawing board and I’m happy the girls have responded well and won two games.” 

Nyamira lost 2-0 against St Joseph’s Kitale in the opening game. He added: “We still have other matches to come. We are going to re-strategise and work on our weaknesses to have the team ready for the Friday game.”

“This trophy is still ours. We are the team to beat. We are going to work on defending set pieces and if they play according to the plan, we are going back to Kenya with the trophy,” said an upbeat Kigai.

After three games, Nyamira top the standings with six points after winning two games and losing one. St Joseph’s are second with six points from two games while Tigoi are third with four points.

Tigoi drubbed Sacred Heart 11-0. Tigoi, who are the national champions led 3-0 at the break. Diana Namachaja scored five times for Tigoi with Lavenda Philly and Abigael Jelagat scoring a brace. Beatrice Oside and Vivian Akinyi scored one apiece.

Musingu edged Arusha Meru from Tanzania 2-0 to record their second straight win in the boys' category. Hillary Angairwa grabbed a brace for  Musingu.

Musingu had beaten Mbarara 2-0 on Tuesday and drew 1-1 with Ntare School from Uganda in the opening game on Monday.

Musingu lead Pool 'A' with seven points after two wins and a draw followed by Ntare School with five points from three games.

St Antony’s Kitale lead Pool 'B' with three points after winning one game and losing one. St Anthony’s, coached by Kevin Lugalia, edged Kyadondo 3-1. Linton Malombe, Kevin Onyango and Leon Njenga scored for St Anthony’s while Abdul Awar scored the lone goal for Kyadondo. The teams will take a break today.
