The Mombasa Sports Club (MSC)
women’s hockey team’s dream of representing Kenya
in the 27th edition of the Africa Club Championships in
Egypt next month still hangs in the balance.
Head coach Chalo Kambona said they are yet to secure sponsorship and have unresolved league issues ahead of the event scheduled for January 24-31.
“We are running out of time. If sponsorship isn’t secured soon, our participation may go up in flames,” Kambona lamented.
MSC finished third in the league with 17 points from eight matches, behind Blazers, who lifted the season’s trophy with 20 points and second-placed Strathmore.
However, Kambona insists they have the same points with the top two teams and not 17 as indicated on the league log.
“We defeated Strathmore head-to-head and we are also ahead in terms of discipline with fewer cards awarded against us. The union must come out clean and address this matter in good time,” he said.
MSC claim they have not been awarded points for their walkover against DHG Wolverines, who walked off the field during their 2-2 encounter.
“If KHU awards walkover points to all teams that played DHG, it could unfairly favour Strathmore,” Kambona argued, emphasising that DHG honoured all their other fixtures.
finished second after six wins, a loss to MSC in their opening match and two draws, including one against Blazers in their deciding match.
MSC, on the other hand, has five wins, a loss, two draws, with one match against DHG pending. Kambona expressed frustration over delayed decisions, accusing officials of withholding results.
“We’ve been quiet, but it’s time our voice is heard and justice is done,” he stated, alleging that KHU may be stalling the decisions deliberately, evidenced by delay in the awards ceremony.
KHU Secretary General Wycliffee Ongori confirmed
receiving MSC’s formal complaint, which has been
referred to the executive committee for review.
