Athletics Kenya Masters hopes to select a strong team for the 10th World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships in Alachua County, Florida, USA next year.
AK Masters secretary general Rose Tata Muya said trials for the championships will be held at Kenyatta University Sports Arena on Saturday.
This is due to the unavailability of Moi Stadium, Kasarani, Ulinzi Sports Complex and Nyayo Stadium which are undergoing renovations.
The event is open to athletes aged 35 years and above.
Muya said: “We want to select a strong team that will replicate the performance of the team that represented the country at the World Masters Championships in Sweden this year.”
The athletes will compete in 10,000m, shot put (men), 60m, long jump, 1,500m, 400m, 10,000m walk race, hammer (women), 200m, 800m, triple jump, javelin (men), 60m hurdles and 3,000m.
The Florida championships will be held between March 23 and 30.
It will be the first time the USA is hosting the event where more than 4, 000 athletes are expected.
WMA Council President Margit Jungmann said, “It will be special to have outdoor events in warmer average temperatures than previous championships and to return to North America.”
The top finisher in every event will make the team, on condition that they meet the qualifying standards.
All participants must produce a national identity card and valid passport.
Teams and individuals will cover their expenses for the trials.
Speaking to the Star on Wednesday, experienced ultra runner Jesse Njoroge, 42, said he will participate in the 10,000m race despite nagging groin and hamstring injuries.
“I’m recovering from nagging injuries. However, I want to give it the best shot,” Njoroge, a father of three said.
He bagged a
10,000m bronze medal at the World Masters
Championships in Sweden.
