Champions KDF, Water Queens ready for Super Cup defence

Super Cup champions KDF and Nairobi Water Queens are set for the defence of their titles when this year’s edition throws off on August 2.

The three-day event, which has attracted six men’s and four women’s teams, will be played at Nyayo Stadium.

KDF tactician Nickson Oyaro said: “We want to get ourselves ready for the Super Cup. It’s tough for the men, who are defending the title, while the women’s team will seek to dethrone Water Queens.”

Water Queens coach Jack Ochieng’ said they are training hard to retain the title. They will seek to be at their best, especially after losing the league crown for the first time in 11 years — to Ulinzi Sharks.

“Super Cup is always intense since the matches, against top teams, come thick and fast and always full of surprises,” he said. “The players (men and women) have been working hard, seeking to correct past mistakes.”

Equity Bank, who finished third in the league will seek to upset formbook.

“We are pushing hard in our training hoping to get to the semifinal and then strategies from there the next move,” said coach Peter Mwathi.

In the draw, NCPB (men) are in Pool ‘A’ alongside Equity Bank and Strathmore University.

Pool ‘B’ has KDF, General Service Unit and Black Mamba. The women’s edition features Ulinzi Sharks, Water Queens, NCPB and Rangers.
