Hit Squad assistant captain Elizabeth Andiego has pledged unwavering commitment to ascend the medal podium at next month’s IBA World Boxing Championships in Serbia.
This competition marks a turning point in Andiego’s career and an opportunity to demonstrate her abilities and tenacity on a global scale.
In an exclusive interview on Sunday, Andiego said: “I have always longed for a medal at this level of competition and Serbia presents a perfect opportunity for me to realise my dreams.”
As the only seasoned competitor in the Hit Squad setup, Andiego bears the weight of expectation.
She is the only well-known of the 12 fighters at the team’s non-residential training camp at the Mathare Depot in Nairobi. Andiego has embraced the role of athlete and leader, inspiring her teammates while honing her craft.
The atmosphere within the camp brims with anticipation.
“The new generation of boxers have shown incredible enthusiasm thus far. I am inspired by the atmosphere in the camp. We all have a common goal, even though every boxer has her own goals and dreams,” she stated.
Her presence in the camp serves as a source of motivation, encouraging her teammates to push beyond their limits and strive for excellence.
“My leadership position enables me to guide the younger boxers, teaching them the principles of self-control, decency and sportsmanship,” she stated.
She is not merely fighting for herself. “I am fighting for the team, the country and the people who have helped me along the way,” she declared.
Aware of the difficulties on the path to the IBA World Boxing Championships, she has committed to a demanding training schedule that calls for mental toughness, physical stamina and focus.
The sweat on her brow reminds her of the sacrifices made to pursue greatness.
“It demonstrates my conviction that hard work and perseverance are the keys to success,” she said.
“In the weeks leading up to the championships, we are
sharpening our focus, studying our opponents and refining
our techniques.”
