Football Kenya Federation presidential aspirant Sam Nyamweya has vowed to criminalize match-fixing if he secures the big seat in February.
Nyamweya, former federation head, said cases of match-fixing have become rampant in Kenya.
His remarks coincide with an incident where Vihiga Bullets head coach Charles Owoko was captured on a video parading a man suspected to have attempted to compromise his players to manipulate a National Super League match.
Owoko is seen in the video dragging the suspect out of his car with force before questioning him.
“The vice is ruining the game in the country and to the shock of many
Kenyans, the current Football Kenya Federation (FKF) seems to be less concerned with what is happening,” Nyamweya alleged.
“Imagine paying to watch a match in which some individuals have already influenced the outcome.”
“I want to assure Kenyans that match-fixing will be a thing of the past when I get re-elected to serve as FKF president at the elections set for February 2024,” he said.
Nyamweya promised to work closely with the Kenyan Parliament to pass a law that would criminalise match-fixing.
“It is something I will not watch happen under my reign and will make sure a tough law is put in place. All players, referees, and officials involved in the vice should be put on notice as my office will not tolerate the same.”
