Shabana protest sanctions to play five match in empty stadium

Shabana FC have protested the decision by the Football Kenya Federation to have them play their next five home matches behind closed doors.

 Shabana chairman Jared Nivaton said they will challenge the decision by FKF’s Leagues and Competition Committee to ban the club’s fans from their next five home games.

“We are going to challenge the ban because we feel it’s unfair. We are currently exploring our options to ensure the decision is overturned,” said Nivaton.  

He said the club was waiting to play their FKF Premier League games at Gusii Stadium for the first time in 18 years. Shabana are scheduled to play Posta Rangers on Saturday.

On Thursday, the Leagues and Competitions Committee through chairman Michael Majua, slapped the Glamour Boys with sanctions following fan trouble during their game against Ulinzi Stars.

The game ended in a 2-2 draw with Ulinzi Stars equalising in the last minute of added time. After the final whistle, some fans uprooted seats and threw them into the playing field.

In a letter to Shabana, the committee said: “Shabana FC shall play their immediate five home matches behind closed doors— beginning with their home game against Posta Rangers on Saturday, September 28, 2024. The club shall be responsible for ensuring adherence to this sanction by their supporter.”

Further, Shabana FC shall pay compensation/bear the cost of the damaged seats at Ulinzi Sports Complex.

Shabana were also ordered to provide compensation for the medical expenses incurred by the two injured officers.

According to the committee, Shabana FC were in breach of Regulation 9.3.3 of the Rules and Regulations Governing Kenyan Football (2019).

According to the rule: “Clubs are responsible for the conduct of their members and supporters and must ensure they behave fairly and refrain from violent, threatening, abusive, obscene and other provocative and unsporting conduct or language at a match.”
